When STELLAR met Katy
- Celebs, Entertainment, In The Mag
- 11th March 2011
You don’t get to meet a superstar like Katy Perry every day, so when our very own Rosaleen McMeel caught up with the beautiful Mrs Brand while on tour in Germany, she sure had a lot to say. We couldn’t squeeze the whole thing into the mag, so for your exclusive reading pleasure, check out the extended interview below…
Katy, you’ve just kicked off your California Dreams Tour in Europe, are you enjoying it?
I love Europe, it’s amazing. I’m going to play in as many places as I possibly can. I started the tour on the 20th of February and it doesn’t end until the middle of November so I’m probably going to be pretty tired!
So do you keep healthy with such a grueling schedule?
I drink the blood of virgins (laughs). No, I just try to take care of myself. A lot of it is a balancing act. I work out and try and eat well. I try to stay away from acidic things and from partying too much. You have to celebrate as well – all work and no play makes for a dull life – but I don’t overdo it.
How would you describe your fashion style in general?
“It’s cute with a helpful dose of humour and a bit of romance.”
Do you always get dressed up or is it only when you’re performing?
No, I always dress up. I’m a woman and I like to keep it fresh, so I love to have fun and play around. I’m not one of those girls who has a hard time getting dressed up. I’m always excited to get ready, even if it’s not an event, I just like to experiment. I’ve got that feminine side and like to use it to the full extent.
No jogging outfits then?
Well, I mean, I have to jog and stay in shape, so yes, I do wear workout gear when necessary. I’m only human.
Who are you fashion icons?
I have so many. It’s a smorgasbord of influences and that range from Agyness Deyn to Dita Von Teese…Wonder Woman’s amazing, Judy Jetson and Lolita too. I love those 1940s outfits. I even have a Lolita charm on my bracelet because that’s my favourite movie ever.
As brand ambassador for Thomas Sabo, what’s your favourite piece in his current collection?
I have a couple of favourite pieces. I have a charm bracelet I put together myself. Every little charm represents something in my life. When I was really young, I would go to the thrift stores and buy vintage charm bracelets from the 40s that the girls would have got from their soldiers. I love that you can take a charm bracelet and incorporate it into your life and have things that mean something to you. It’s like having a memory book on your wrist.
What does the bone charm stand for?
Throw me a f*cking bone. That’s what that stands for.
Do you have a particular piece of jewellery other than your wedding ring that is special to you?
Yes, my grandma gave me the earrings I wore on my wedding day, that she wore when she got married and that my cousin wore on her wedding. I also like anything that has a good sense of humour to it. Sometimes you’ll find me wearing really off pieces of jewellery, that have stories to them. I like to wear things that are more than one dimensional.
Who has the biggest jewellery box, your husband or you?
My husband. We steal each other’s jewellery actually.
What luxury do you spend most of your money on?
Property. If you can own a home and take care of your family, that’s a luxury.
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
Duh, I’d be a cat, I love cats. I’m such a cat lady, but I’m trying revamp the cat lady image because typically when you think of the cat lady you think of someone who’s a bit of a mess and not very attractive, wearing one of those big outfits with tangled hair, so I’m trying to revamp her image and make her into a sleek sexy character now. I would love to be a cat. I’m actually thinking about cutting off my fingers and turning them into paws.
Tell us about your tattoos?
I have three. I have a little strawberry on my leg that has a face on it, always happy, always smiling. I have Jesus on my wrist and I have Go With The Flow on the inside of my right arm in Sanskrit.
What one beauty product could you not live without?
I love mascara. I think my eyes are the one thing I connect with people. I think eye contact is very powerful so I like to highlight mine with a little mascara – actually a lot of mascara – and I like individual fake lashes. I love the CoverGirl classic pink and green mascara.
What is beauty to you?
True personality and acceptance. While I love being able to accent the outside and really highlight who I am as a woman through my appearance, if I’m a b*tch nobody cares. It’s really about personality and the way you present yourself, your character and your integrity. That’s beauty to me.
