Worth Its Weight In Gold

While we lust after a little sparkly number as much as the next cuckoo, we’d have to stop short of a €25,000 splurge. But it seems models and magazine eds [Eh, not this ed – Ed] around the world disagree, as this Balmain number is being pushed upon us as the must-have Christmas party dress.
After Miu Miu Gate Oh-10, in which the same dress (in different colours at least) landed seven magazine covers, we thought designers would be a little choosier about their cover choices. But it seems Balmain has been doling out the €25,000 gowns like they’re, um, going out of fashion. The dress has appeared, in long and short variations, on no less than seven magazine cover.
German Vogue kicked it off in August with Abbey Lee Kershaw, before Cindy Crawford graced Vogue India in October and Claudia Schiffer appeared on Zeit Magazine’s 40th b’day cover the same month. Then Japanese Vogue editor, Anna Dello Russo, became a covergirl herself working the front of 10 Magazine. Even Spanish Vogue’s group cover featured a cameo of the glittery gúna. Harper’s Bazaar’s December covergirl, Natalia Vodianova loved her cover look so much, she wore it to their Woman of the Year awards. And just this week, Anne Hathaway peered out of Elle in the same gold sequin draping.
So despite the move to highstreet chic, and fashion mags claiming to have turned recession-savvy, this €25,000 price tag shows they’ve still a little while (and about €24,950) to go.
